Congratulations, you’ve made it through peak wedding season. Now, with summer nearing its end, picking out the best fall wedding guest dress should feel like less of a race to find something! anything! and more of an opportunity to get creative with the dress code. No matter how many summer weddings you dressed up for this year, fall’s cooler temperatures mean a whole new realm of possibilities: long sleeves, soft-to-the-touch fabrics, and even some creative layering. (Boleros, anyone?)

Personally, this was the first year I prepared to attend a handful of weddings back to back. I didn’t want to wear one dress over and over, but I was also hesitant to splurge on a dozen dresses purchased specifically for other people’s parties throughout various seasons. I set out to find a few options that could easily transition from “tropical co*cktail” rehearsal dinners to formal vows, and from a villa in France to a friend’s backyard in Colorado. Even with the constant churn of locations and hyper-specific dress codes to consider, I found I could make it work with only three or four dresses in my rotation.

Dresses that meet several dress codes have a few qualities in common. “Opting for classic silhouettes and leaning into accessories to bring in seasonal colors and trends is the easiest way to transition dresses from season to season,” Reformation senior director of design Jess Kotal recommends. She suggests black or metallic if you want an especially versatile dress. Then, “regardless of the time of year, look for dainty feminine details like bows and self-covered buttons to create an extra special, elevated effect.”

Ahead, I’ve pulled together 20 of the best fall wedding guest dresses to wear for ceremonies this season (and any time of year).

FAQs

What do you wear to a fall wedding ceremony? ›

What should a guest wear to an October wedding? ›

October is peak fall, so go ahead and embrace a seasonal look (you know, if that's your vibe). Warm Earth tones are the perfect choice for dresses, suits and separates alike. I actually just invested in a classic black suiting option that will be my go-to for fall weddings.” Alexandra Macon, Vogue contributor and co-founder of Over-The-Moon, agrees: "It is perfectly acceptable, and chic, to wear black to a wedding—as long as it's festive and not funereal," she says.

Choose a Dark Color

Most fall wedding color palettes include a dark, moody color like navy, burgundy, or hunter green.

What is the most appropriate color to wear to a wedding? ›

Dark colors, as you'd wear for a formal wedding, are still safe here and you won't look out of place if you choose them. But you'll find that lighter greys and blues are also acceptable, and may be a better choice if the wedding takes place during the summer.

What is elegant dress code for ladies? ›

A midi or mini party dress styled with heeled sandals, a clutch bag can create an elegant look. If the occasion is slightly more formal, a long party dress would be appropriate too paired with silver or gold jewellery.

What do you wear to a 4pm wedding? ›

The staff suggests that if a wedding is taking place at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., you should wear something that easily transitions from day to night; any ceremony after 6 p.m. should be strictly co*cktail.

Can you wear open toed shoes to a fall wedding? ›

You can also wear boots or open-toe heeled shoes to a fall wedding if that's more your style. But again, Lee urges to "think about where you'll be walking." "Open versus closed-toe heels are simply a style choice and matter of personal preference," says Walsh, but they're generally better suited to indoor events.

Can I wear a floral dress to an October wedding? ›

Dark florals are a perennial fall favorite. On a co*cktail dress silhouette, they're just right for a wedding reception.

Can you wear a light blue dress to a fall wedding? ›

But if you're not a fan of earthy tones like brown, green or deep red, we have good news for you: blue is back for autumn. While blue is of course a super popular spring/summer colour, it doesn't mean you can't keep wearing it through autumn, particularly to an occasion that calls for a suit, like a wedding.

What is a fall wedding color? ›

Jewel tones, like emerald green, cranberry red, amethyst and navy blue, are often used interchangeably for late fall and early winter wedding color palettes. For color schemes that include airier, lighter tones, we'd suggest adding a darker accent hue, like black or smokey gray, to bring dimension and contrast.
