Instant Pot Orange Mulled Wine | Glühwein Recipe - Recipes From A Pantry (1)

Christmas is *kinda* coming (any excuse peeps, any excuse), which means drinks like Instant Pot Mulled Wine are now on the menu. This traditional Glühwein aka a German drink is a well-loved staple served over the festive holiday and throughout winter especially at Christmas Market stalls.

And nothing beats the cozy smell of spiced mulled wine, so even more reason to make it. And friends, it could not be easier to make.

It is simply a case of putting all the wine, orange juice and mulling spices in the Instant Pot and letting it simmer. A few mins later and out comes a rather delicious and more-ish German Glühwein.

Want to make it adults-only? Then add in some rum at the end. Even better is that the Pressure Cooker will keep the mulled wine warm till you are ready to serve (if you can wait for longer than 5 mins, you are stronger than me……).

FAQs

What Wine To Use For Glühwein?

You can make your Glühwein with pretty much any red wine you want. However, this is best made with everyday and more inexpensive wines. Those lovely and more expensive bottles of wine are much better kept for a special or "I just want a good bottle of wine" occasion.

Even better, use those bottle of red wine that you were gifted and did not like - since the lovely flavor of the spices and citrus will really transform your wine.

How do you make store bought mulled wine? ›

If you'd rather buy a pre-made bottle of mulled wine, we've tested them to find the very best. Pour the contents out into a saucepan, and gently heat over a gentle heat to warm through.

Why does my mulled wine taste bitter? ›

You need to infuse the wine long enough with the spices to take on their flavour but DON'T ON ANY ACCOUNT LET THE MIXTURE BOIL as you'll be left with a bitter taste. Slow and low is the way to go. And it shouldn't be served piping hot, just comfortably - and comfortingly - warm.

How do you jazz up shop bought mulled wine? ›

Here are a few fun ways to garnish the mulled wine: Drop in a cinnamon stick. Drop in an orange slice. Dot cloves into orange peels and drop the studded peel in.

What's the difference between mulled wine and gluhwein? ›

Mulled wine is hot spiced wine. Gluhwein is a German term for exactly the same. However, they might not necessarily taste the same way because there are so many different recipes, spice mixes and wines to choose from.

What kind of wine do you use to make gluhwein? ›

Zinfandels, Merlots, Syrah/Shiraz, or Garnache tend to work best. Avoid red wines high in tannins or have an oaky flavor, and avoid light reds. Sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to have a full-bodied, fruity flavor, can work in a pinch, as can Malbec, which tends to have a bold, spicy flavor.

Should you use cheap wine for mulled wine? ›

Mulled Wine Ingredients:

Wine: No need to splurge on a pricey bottle — a mid-range bottle of dry red or white wine will do. (Or if you're making a big batch, this is a great recipe to break out a nicer boxed wine too!)

What is a good base wine for mulled wine? ›

The best wines for mulled wine are richly fruity, medium-bodied ones with little oak aging, because these stand up to the bold sweetness and spice of the hot drink without tasting too tannic. For example, try a Chilean Merlot, a Zinfandel from California or a Grenache from Spain.

Does mulling wine remove alcohol? ›

The heat used in mulling encourages greater flavours from the citrus and the spices but also reduces the alcohol content, hence the common addition of a slug of spirit or liqueur just before serving.

Why has my mulled wine gone fizzy? ›

Either some carbon dioxide was trapped inside when the wine was bottled, or the wine started to re-ferment while in the bottle, and the bubbles are a byproduct. A little fizz won't make you sick, but I find it unpleasant, and it usually comes with a yeasty stink.

Can you overheat mulled wine? ›

The key to successfully heating up mulled wine is to take it up to a nice warm temperature without boiling it. Wine has a lower boiling point than water, and overheating it will cook off some of the alcohol, resulting in an unpleasant bitter flavour.

How do you counteract bitterness in mulled wine? ›

Sugar or honey.

Not all recipes call for it, but often you will need it to balance out bitterness and/or alcohol. My expert advice: do not add any sugar or honey until the very, very end. You want to add it to taste because depending on the random wine you're using and the spirit, you may not need much of it, if any.

What can I use instead of star anise in mulled wine? ›

Cloves can be used to replace star anise because they also provide a sweetness along with bitter flavors to dishes. Use less cloves than you would star anise, and they have a stronger flavor.

Is mulled wine good for you? ›

The red wine base in mulled wine brings its own set of health benefits. Resveratrol is associated with heart health benefits and may help protect the lining of blood vessels, lower bad cholesterol levels, and prevent blood clots. When consumed in moderation, red wine has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease.

How long does mulled wine last once opened? ›

Once opened, mulled wine is known to only maintain its quality for 3 to 5 days. You will be able to determine whether your mulled wine has gone bad by assessing its appearance, aroma, and taste. Visually inspect the wine for any unusual changes, such as a cloudy or murky appearance, sedimentation, or discolouration.

What is the best way to heat gluhwein? ›

Saucepan on low. The pre-bottled stuff tastes better if you toss some orange slices in there. I meant to buy a cheap bottle of red wine today to make Gluhwein. I've also done it for a few hours in a crock pot on high, that way it stays warm for refills/larger groups of people.

What is the alcohol level in gluhwein? ›

Officially speaking, the drink is defined by the spices used in it, namely cloves and / or cinnamon. The base also needs to be either white or red wine and have an alcohol content of at least 7%.

Does the alcohol cook out of gluhwein? ›

With the goal of consuming the alcohol, any evaporated alcohol is a small affront to the holiday season. But fear not, hot cider, hot toddy, and mulled wine lovers: Around 85 percent of your beloved alcohol will survive the heating process.

How long does homemade gluhwein last? ›

Make All of It Ahead of Time

Just follow the directions for your favorite recipe and let the wine simmer with spices until it's deeply infused. Then let the mulled wine cool at room temperature, transfer it to an airtight container, and store it in the fridge — it will keep well there for up to three days.
